About Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar
The Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar is an annual music festival held in February in Viña del Mar, Chile. Established in 1960, it is described as the oldest and largest music festival in Latin America. It runs for six nights at the Quinta Vergara amphitheatre, which holds about 15,000 spectators, and is broadcast live on television, radio and streaming platforms. It was cancelled only in 2021 and 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first edition, from 21 to 28 February 1960, came from the mayor Gustavo Lorca and Carlos Ansaldo of the municipal tourism department: a competition for original songs about the city. A folk contest was added in 1961. An open-air amphitheatre designed by the architect Hernando López was built in stages from 1963, and its seagull-shaped roof, added in 1967, stood until it was replaced in 2002. Television broadcasts spread the festival across Chile in the 1970s and later across the Americas.
The international and folk song contests still exist, but guest stars have become the main draw. The audience, nicknamed El Monstruo, is known for showing approval or rejection openly, and can call for performers to receive the festival's awards, the Silver and Gold Seagulls; a Platinum Seagull was added in 2012 for artists with a long association with the festival.
The 65th edition ran from 22 to 27 February 2026, with the Viña gala on 20 February. The municipality has announced that the 66th edition will run from 22 to 27 February 2027, with the gala on 19 February. Hosts, artists and ticket prices for 2027 had not been fully announced at the time of research. Tickets for recent editions have been sold through Puntoticket, which listed the 2026 shows at the Quinta Vergara from 22 to 27 February. In 2025 one night was postponed to 1 March because of a near-nationwide power outage, a reminder that the schedule can change at short notice. The international contest in 2026 was won by Antoñito Molina of Spain with Me Prometo, and the folk contest by Los 4 Vientos of Chile with Valoración.
