About Festival Nacional de Folklore de Cosquín

The Festival Nacional de Folklore de Cosquín is Argentina's best-known folk music festival. It is held every January in the town of Cosquín, in the Punilla valley of Córdoba province, and runs for nine nights, known as the Nueve Lunas de Cosquín, or nine moons. Performances take place on the Atahualpa Yupanqui stage in the Plaza Próspero Molina, also called the Plaza Nacional del Folklore.

The first edition ran from 21 to 29 January 1961. Local residents organised it to attract summer visitors, building a stage across national route 38. Artists from across the country took part, including Jaime Dávalos and the Uruguayan Aníbal Sampayo, and the festival quickly became the most important annual folk event in Argentina. Over the decades Cosquín has launched the careers of many leading folk artists, including Los Chalchaleros and Los Cantores del Alba. The main stage was named after Atahualpa Yupanqui in 1972.

The programme covers chacarera, zamba, chamamé and other Argentine folk styles, with concerts, dance groups and competitions for new performers. The festival is broadcast nationally, and the town fills with peñas, informal music venues where musicians and audiences play late into the night.

The 66th edition ran from 24 January to 1 February 2026.

The 67th festival will run from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 January 2027 in the Plaza Próspero Molina, as confirmed by the Comisión Municipal de Folklore. The visual identity for 2027 honours the Cosquín poncho, which marks 60 years since its creation. The full nightly programme was due to be presented in the city of Córdoba, and the commission has published a schedule for season tickets (abonos) and single-night tickets. Prices were not yet confirmed when this record was compiled.

Cosquín is about an hour by road from the city of Córdoba. Many visitors stay in the town or nearby resorts in the Punilla valley during the festival fortnight. Cosquín Rock grew out of the same town, holding its first editions in the Plaza Próspero Molina.
