About Cygnet Folk Festival

The Cygnet Folk Festival takes over the small town of Cygnet, in Tasmania's Huon Valley, for one weekend every January. Founded in 1982, it is a not-for-profit community event run by the volunteer committee of Huon Folk Inc, with a paid festival manager and artistic director and a large volunteer crew. Cygnet has fewer than 1,600 residents, yet the festival draws thousands of visitors each year.

The 2027 festival runs from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 January 2027, with weekend passes valid from 5pm on the Friday until midnight on the Sunday. The program covers folk, acoustic and world music alongside dance, poetry, workshops, masterclasses, children's entertainment, food, wine and local crafts. Performances take place in venues across the town, including the Town Hall and its Supper Room, Loongana Park and the St James auditorium. The festival has also announced that it is saying goodbye to Carmel Hall, a favourite venue.

The 2027 masterclass series features fiddler Chris Stout and harpist Catriona McKay, percussionist Greg Sheehan, The Cameron Jones Trio on gypsy jazz guitar, vocal coach Tilley and improv comedy with Rob Barratt. Masterclasses are booked separately from festival passes.

Tickets are sold through Humanitix. An adult weekend pass costs $247.50 and a weekend pass with camping $330, plus a booking fee of 2.25% and 40 cents, with the fee profits donated to Humanitix's children's education programs. Concession, youth (13 to 17) and child (5 to 12) tickets are offered, children four and under are free, and limited day tickets are available for Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets can sell out, so buying early is recommended.

The festival campground is at Burtons Reserve, open from 9am on the Thursday before the festival until 10am on the Monday after. Sites are unpowered and first come, first served, with public toilets plus extra portable toilets, a picnic shelter with barbecues and a playground. Glamping and a tent village provided by Wallaroo Camping Hire are new for 2027. Self-contained RVs park separately near the Cygnet Primary School oval, which also serves as day parking.

Cygnet is a zero-waste event with no landfill bins, so festival-goers are asked to bring reusable bottles, cups and cutlery and take their rubbish home.

Accessibility

The festival is a Companion Card affiliate: carers of card holders get free admission. Reserved seating and wheelchair spaces are held in all festival venues; contact the festival beforehand to arrange them or to request help with venue entry. Loongana Park has wheelchair access from a reserved bay on Mary Street and accessible toilets in its public block. The Town Hall has a ramp entrance and accessible toilets, with a lift to the Supper Room. St James auditorium has wheelchair access from George Street. Accessible parking is on Mary Street, near the LINC library and on George Street.
